(Mohammed Saeed, General Secretary of the academy)

State Home Minister R R Patil on Monday said a link leading to a webpage with provocative content had a serious impact on the protest at Azad Maidan. “There were 60 lakh hits on a particular link leading to provocative content. But the videos and images were not of incidents in Assam and Myanmar. They were doctored and were actually images of the Gujarat riot and China earthquake,” said Patil.
Even as Muslim leaders called for peace after Saturday’s violence near Azad Maidan, the Mumbai Police has begun to take serious note of groups that are continuing to post inflammatory content on social networking sites.
Even as the organisers of the protest meet have apologised for the violence, a few groups on social networking sites, with several hundred followers each, have urged members to continue spreading the word about atrocities against Muslims and to “come out on the streets again in other cities”. Senior police officers confirmed that the Mumbai Police was contemplating action against those posting inflammatory content on these sites.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said that the Cyber Crime Cell is monitoring all posts and pictures of the Azad Maidan protest put up on Facebook and other sites. “We are also checking and tracing persons who put up such pictures, both before and after the violence, on Saturday. Action will be taken against such persons,” said Roy.
One group on Facebook, called ‘STOP killing Muslims in Burma’, had 12,606 members at the last count. With posts asking group members to organise demonstrations and inform the moderators for publicity, the Azad Maidan protest too finds mention in the group page. Until Monday evening, there were 320 ‘likes’ and 153 comments about the Azad Maidan protest. One user urged other group members to organise similar protests in their cities.
The use of social media was key in publicising the Azad Maidan protest with a special ‘public event notification’ on Facebook still active. More than 1,500 users had confirmed that they would attend the protest. Posts on the page ranged from media bashing to condemning alleged police brutality on “peaceful protestors” at Azad Maidan. One user referred to the two victims who died in the violence as martyrs.
With posts ranging from “waking up the Indian government” to “doing whatever it takes to draw attention”, the groups have seen a flurry of activity. “As a general rule, the hate-mongers are more active on the worldwide web,” said Javed Anand, secretary of Muslims for Secular Democracy and trustee of Citizens for Justice and Peace, which handed over a memorandum to Commissioner of Police Arup Patnaik calling for, among other things, reviving Mohalla Committees in sensitive parts of the city. “But the overwhelming majority of young Muslims are angry at what happened. They’re drawing comparisons with peaceful community movements and are calling what happened at Azad Maidan a disgrace to the community,” Anand added.
Retired assistant commissioner of police Shamsher Khan Pathan said he believes the community members will hand over the perpetrators of violence once CCTV footage identifies them. “But the police should not pick up innocent Muslims. They should be strict against criminals, but there should be no vindictiveness.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan-based blogger Faraz Ahmed posted a link showing that some of these pictures were from other conflict and disaster-hit Asian countries.

No intelligence failure, says Mumbai police chief

Enough force stationed at protest venue: Arup Patnaik
Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik on Monday rubbished reports of intelligence failure on Saturday’s riots in the Azad Maidan area here and asserted there was enough force to control the mob. They had intelligence reports that the protest might turn ugly, prompting them to deploy additional forces.
“Otherwise when do you see a Joint Commissioner [Law and Order], four Deputy Commissioners and an Additional Commissioner on the field in uniform on a holiday for a protest rally,” he asked. A force of around 750 personnel was enough to control mobs running to more than 50,000 people, he claimed. There were around 15,000-20,000 protesters present near the Azad Maidan.
Mr. Patnaik said violence erupted at 3.17 p.m. and the situation was brought under control by 3.40 p.m.
Asked why force was not used earlier to control the rioters, he said the police showed utmost restraint. “Should I have fired, I don’t know. Would you have wanted to see 500 bodies? I was more afraid of my force when 500 jawans were ready to fire, with hands on the triggers. I had to control them first, then turn to the protesters,” Mr. Patnaik told journalists after holding a special meeting with senior officers.
Mr. Patnaik was on the spot within minutes of the situation turning violent. He addressed the crowd from the dais of the rally and appealed for calm, reminding people of the incidents during the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition. The police chief told them he did not want any repetition of those ghastly memories, thus calming down the crowds.
Muslim leaders tendered apologies to him on Monday and expressed their desire to help the injured police personnel. “All the Ulema had come to apologise. That is because they know that the police acted with equity and fair play,” he said.
A magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the police firing and a special investigation team set up to probe the incident.
Officers of the cyber crime unit would be associated with the probe. Many morphed images were circulated among the gathering to oppose the “atrocities” on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar.
So far, 23 persons had been arrested.
Officials said they were looking into whether underworld elements were present among the rioters.
Mr. Patnaik said they were of the opinion that it was not the protesters who were involved in the arson. “It was another mob that came from outside. We have not yet been able to identify the group. But we are going through CCTV footage and the footage provided by camerapersons.”

My reply to “The Hindu”:
The picture clearly proves that the riot was going on or went on in from of the police. In other words, the police was waiting for political instructions to act.In an interview to a TV channel The Police Commissioner confessed that they could not act completely, as they did not want to repeat the consequences of the earlier riots! But that restrain was rather instructed than realized for the situation, as they did not interact with the organizers to stop the protest. Had it was stopped, even these two persons would not have been killed, women police molested, 50 policemen attacked and injured, etc

Morphed images used to garner support, says CJP
The Hindu MUMBAI, August 14, 2012

Teesta Setalvad, greets Police Commissioner for mature handling of situation
A non-governmental organisation on Monday submitted to Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik certain “morphed” images of “atrocities” on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar which were allegedly used to garner public support for the August 11 protest which turned riotous at the city’s Azad Maidan.
“We have also shared details of the misuse of certain photographs from the Internet claiming that these are about atrocities on Rohingyas in Burma when in fact they belong to different tragedies and protests,” said a press note issued by Citizens for Justice and Peace’ (CJP).
In the letter to Mr. Patnaik, the CJP has annexed a copy of the blog written by a Pakistani writer Faraz Ahmed on July 19, 2012, with the heading ‘Social media is lying to you about Burma’s Muslim ‘cleansing.”
DRASTIC MANIPULATION
The blog categorically stated that the images used to incite people are “drastic manipulation.” “These images are false and are only igniting hatred and prejudice in our youth. We need to become more vigilant and aware of the credibility and authenticity of pictures we browse through. It only takes one wrong image to push us over the edge towards extremism,” the blogger has allegedly written, according to the copy annexed by CJP.
Teesta Setalvad, CJP secretary also congratulated the Police Commissioner, saying: “His mature handling of a potentially explosive situation on Saturday did ensure that matters were brought under control. Most of all his immediate presence at the venue within minutes of the situation spiralling out of control, his direct appeal to the protesters and organisers, his reference to the bloodbath of 1992-1993 worked to calm the crowd and draw apologies from many sections of the Muslim community.”

My reply to “The Hindu”:
With the knowledge of the Raza Academy only the circulation of the so-called morphed images, clippings, SMS etc were circulated. Maulana Gulam Abdul Kadri roused passion with his rendering. The Police were just spectator for some time, before they could realize the seriousness of the rioting. The Police could have immediately advised the academy to stop the protest march. Therefore, it is evident that there was no political will power to contain Muslim vilence, riot or anything. Ironically, when the State HM was enjoying Iftar Party, when bombs were exploding to greet the Govt.HM!

Riots in Mumbai by Muslims in support of Bangladeshi infiltrators !
O Hindus ! In fact, the Hindus were displaced in the riots of Bangladeshi Muslims in Assam. Despite this, the Muslims in Mumbai had the audacity to take out a protest to support the Assam infiltrators and indulge in violence. This can happen only in Bharat !

Mumbai Riots : Ban the fanatic ‘Raza Academy’ instantly demands Hindu Janajagruti Samiti
August 13, 2012
Mumbai : In the Assam riots, heinous atrocities were perpetrated on the local Hindus and not on the Bangladesh infiltrators of Jihadi mindset. Due to the riots of infiltrator Muslims, more than 3 lakh Bodo Hindus have misfortune to live as the displaced in their own country. The riot has caused death of hundreds of Hindus and thousands were injured. However, creating a bogie that injustice was done on the Assamese Muslims, the hardliner and fanatic
Raza Academy has provoked the feelings of the Muslims and carried out the riot with preplanning. Hence Raza Academy must be banned immediately and stringent action should be taken against it. Again compensation should taken from it for all the losses to public property during the riot. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti made this demand in a press statement.
The press statement says, it is the method of the working of Raza Academy to provoke the Muslims and instigate them to carry out anti-national activities, make anti-constitutional activities. This was noticed through various examples so far. That the same method was applied by it this time also is evident from the series of incidents during the riots. The people gathered for the protest possessed lathis, stones and daggers etc. Only one thing that the Muslims were brandishing the daggers and creating terror among the citizens is enough to conclude that the riot was pre-planned.
When it was brought to the notice of the chief minister by a lady journalist that the activities of the rioters were overlooked by the police, he shouted at her instead of appreciating her. This is highly deplorable. It is doubtful whether the Congress Government will take a stringent action against the Muslims who have indulged in anti-national activities.
Some anti-constitutional activities of ‘Raza Academy’
Raza Academy’s president Yusuf Raza was involved in provoking the Muslims during 2007 riot in Bhivandi and killing 2 policemen by setting them on fire. He was arrested also in the incident.
Raza Academy issued a Fatwa to kill Mr. Charles Moor, journalist of London-based renowned daily ‘Telegraph’ under the charge that he insulted Prophet Mohammad. The press statement is available at the Academy’s website.
In January 2012, Mr. Salman Rushdie was to attend a book exhibition in Jaipur, Rajasthan. To oppose him, the Academy declared that ‘he who will slap him with a shoe will be given a reward of Rs.1 lakh’.
