ருஷ்டியின் வருகையும், முஸ்லீம்களின் எதிர்ப்பும்: பிரபல ஆங்கில எழுத்தாளரான சல்மான் ருஷ்டியை இந்தியாவுக்குள் விடக் கூடாது என்று முஸ்லிம் அமைப்புகள் தெரிவித்துள்ளதால் அவர் ஜெயப்பூரில் நடக்கும் இலக்கிய விழாவுக்கு சத்தமில்லாமல் வந்து செல்லவிருக்கிறார் என்றெல்லாம் ஊடகங்கள் ஊதி பார்த்தன. பிரபல பிரிட்டிஷ் இந்திய எழுத்தாளரான சல்மான ருஷ்டி வரும் 20 முதல் 24ம் தேதி வரை ராஜஸ்தான் மாநிலம் ஜெயப்பூரில் நடக்கும் இலக்கிய விழாவில் கலந்து கொள்ளவிருக்கிறார் என்று செய்து வந்ததும், முஸ்லிம்களின் உணர்வுகளை மதிக்காத ருஷ்டியின் விசாவை ரத்து செய்யுமாறு இஸ்லாமிய மத அமைப்பான “தாரூல் உலூம் தியோபான்ட்” பிரதமர் மன்மோகன் சிங்கிற்கும், காங்கிரஸ் தலைவர் சோனியா காந்திக்கும் கடிதம் அனுப்பியது. பிரமரும், சோனியாவும் தக்க நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கவில்லை என்றால் தாருல் உலூம் உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கும் என்று அதன் தலைவர் மௌலானா முப்தி அபுல் காசிம் நொமானி தெரிவித்துள்ளார்[1]. மேலும் சல்மான்ருஷ்டி மீது செருப்பு வீசினால் ரூ.1 லட்சம் பரிசளிக்கப்படும் என்று மும்பையில் உள்ள இஸ்லாமிய அமைப்பு அறிவிப்பு வெளியிட்டுள்ளது (தலைக்கே சன்மானம் அறிவித்துள்ளபோது செருப்பு வீசுவதற்கு என்ன பணம் கொடுப்பது?). ஆனால் மத்திய அரசு இது குறித்து எதுவும் தெரிவிக்கவில்லை. இந்நிலையில் அறிவித்தவாறு ருஷ்டி இலக்கிய விழாவில் கலந்து கொள்வார் என்று நிகழ்ச்சி ஏற்பாட்டாளர்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.
பலதடவை வந்து சென்றுள்ளபோது, இப்பொழுது ஏன் ஆர்பாட்டம்? கடந்த 1998ம் ஆண்டு வெளிவந்த ருஷ்டியின் “சேட்டனிக் வெர்சஸ்” (சாத்தானின் வேத வாக்கியங்கள்) என்ற நூல் மூலம் முஸ்லிம்களின் மத உணர்வை அவமதித்ததற்காக அவருக்கு எதிராக பத்வா கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. இதையடுத்து கடந்த 2000ம் ஆண்டு அவர் பலத்த பாதுகாப்புடன் இந்தியாவுக்கு வந்து சென்றார். கடந்த 2007ம் ஆண்டு முஸ்லிம்களின் எதிர்ப்பையும் மீறி அவர் ஜெயப்பூர் இலக்கிய விழாவில் கலந்து கொண்டார். இலக்கிய விழாக்களில் கலந்து கொள்வதில் வழக்கமாக உள்ளபோது, இந்தாண்டு ஏன், அதனை பிரச்சினையாக்கியுள்ளார்கள் என்று தெரியவில்லை. தெரியாமல் என்ன, உபியில் தேர்தல் நடக்கிறதே, எத்தனை தொகுதிகளில் 30% மேலாக முஸ்லீம்கள் உள்ளனர், பிறகு ஓட்டு பெரிதா, இலக்கியம் பெரிதா?
ஓட்டுவங்கி அரசியல் செய்யும் சோனியா-காங்கிரஸ்: உத்தர பிரதேசத்தில் உள்ள முஸ்லிம் வாக்காளர்களை மனதில் வைத்து அரசியல் கட்சிகள் ருஷ்டி விவகாரத்தை கையில் எடுத்துள்ளன. காங்கிரஸ் செயற்குழு உறுப்பினர் ராஷீத் மசூத் கூறுகையில், “முஸ்லிம்கள் ருஷ்டியை மன்னிக்கக் கூடாது. உத்தர பிரதேசத்தில் தேர்தல் நடக்கவிருக்கும்போது அவரது வருகை பிரச்சனையைக் கிளப்பும். அதனால் ஜெய்ப்பூர் விழாவை ரத்து செய்ய வேண்டும்”, என்றார். பயந்து போன, பாஜக துணை தலைவர் முக்தார் அப்பாஸ் நக்வி கூறுகையில், “தேர்தல் நேரத்தில் ருஷ்டி வருவது சரியல்ல. அவருக்கு ஐக்கிய முற்போக்கு கூட்டணி அரசு விசா வழங்குவது உகந்ததன்று“, என்று பாட்டு பாடியுள்ளார். ருஷ்டி வருகையை தடை செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று சமாஜ்வாடி கட்சி தலைவர் அகமது ஹசன் தெரிவித்துள்ளார் அவர் வருவதால் மாநிலத்தில் சட்டம் ஒழுங்கு பிரச்சனை ஏற்படும் அபாயம் உள்ளதாக ராஜஸ்தான் மாநில முதல்வர் அசோக் கெஹ்லாட் உள்துறை அமைச்சர் ப. சிதம்பரத்தை சந்தித்து தெரிவித்துள்ளார். அதெப்படி சொல்லிவைத்தால் போல மற்ற கட்சிகளில் மட்டும், முஸ்லீம்கள்தாம் எதிர்ப்புத் தெரிவிக்கிறார்கள், ஆனால், காங்கிரஸில் அமைச்சர்களே வந்து விடுகிறார்கள்!
தடை செய்யப்பட்ட சிமி இயக்கத்தினரால் ஆபத்தாம் – கூறுவது உள்துறை-சிதம்பரம்: இந்நிலையில் சல்மான் ருஷ்டி உயிருக்கு சிமி இயக்கத்தை சேர்ந்தவர்களால் திடீர் ஆபத்து ஏற்படலாம் என்று மத்திய உள்துறை அமைச்சகம் எச்சரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளது[2]. ஆஹா, சிதம்பரம் தான் என்னமாய் வேலை செய்கிறார்? சிமி இயக்க தலைவர்களின் நடவடிக்கையை கண்காணித்த பிறகே இந்த உத்தரவை உள்துறை வெளியிட்டுள்ளது[3]. அதாவது, அந்த அளவிற்கு, அவாது திறமை உள்ளது. தடை செய்த பிறகும், அவர்கள் வேலை செய்வார்களாம், சிதம்பரம் பார்த்துக் கொண்டே இருப்பாராம்! மேலும் ருஷ்டி ஜெய்ப்பூருக்கு வருவதை அம்மாநில மக்கள் விரும்பவில்லை என்றும் அவர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். ஆனால், காங்கிரஸ்காரர்கள் அங்கு பெண்களை கற்பழித்துக் கொண்டிருப்பதையும், கற்பழித்துக் கொலை செய்து கொண்டிருப்பதையும் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருப்பார்களாம்!
கெலாட்டின் கலாட்டா, சிதம்பரத்தின் சில்மிஷம்: சிதம்பரத்தைச் சந்தித்த பிறகு கெஹ்லாட் செய்தியாளர்களிடம் கூறியதாவது, “ருஷ்டி ஜெய்ப்பூருக்கு வருகிறாரா, இல்லையா என்ற அதிகாரப்பூர்வமான தகவல்கள் என்னிடம் இல்லை. ஆனால் அவர் வருவதை உள்ளூர் மக்கள் விரும்பவில்லை. இலக்கிய விழா ஏற்பாட்டாளர்களுடன் எனது தலைமைச் செயலாளர் தொடர்பில் உள்ளார். சட்டம் ஒழுங்கு பிரச்சனை ஏற்படுவதை எந்த மாநில அரசும் விரும்பாது. எனவே, இது குறித்து மத்திய அரசிடம் தெரிவித்துள்ளேன்”, என்றார்[4]. சல்மான் ருஷ்டி இந்தியா வருவது தொடர்பாக குழப்பம் நீடிக்கிறது[5]. இந்நிலையில் சல்மான் ருஷ்டி இலக்கிய விழாவின் துவக்க நிகழ்ச்சியில் கலந்து கொள்ளாமல் பிற நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் மட்டும் சத்தமில்லாமல் கலந்து கொள்ளவிருக்கிறார் என்று கூறப்படுகின்றது[6]. சல்மான் ருஷ்டி 20.1.2012 அன்று ராஜஸ்தான் தலைநகர் ஜெய்ப்பூரில் நடக்க உள்ள இலக்கிய விழாவுக்கு வருகை தர உள்ளதால் அவருக்கு பாதுகாப்பு ஏற்பாடுகள் தீவிரப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன. இதையடுத்து சல்மான் ருஷ்டி தங்கம் இடம் மற்றும் பயண விவரங்கள் ரகசியமாக வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஆனால், சல்மான் ருஷ்டி ஜெயப்பூர் இலக்கிய விழாவில் கலந்துகொள்ளவில்லை.
ருஷ்டி வரவில்லையாம்! இஸ்லாம் அடிப்படைவாதிகளால் ஆபத்து என்றால், இந்திய அரசாங்கம் என்ன செய்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது? என்றுதான் மற்றவர்கள் நினைத்துக் கொள்வர்கள், கேட்கவும் செய்வார்கள். இந்தியாவில் அவருக்கு உயிருக்கு அச்சுறுத்தல் உள்ளதால் அவர் தனது பயணத்தை ரத்து செய்துள்ளார்.

இதற்கிடையே ருஷ்டி டுவிட்டரில் கூறியிருப்பதாவது, “இந்திய வருகையையொட்டி நான் எந்த கருத்தையும் தெரிவிக்காமல் இருந்தேன். இதன் மூலம் மாநில நிர்வாகத்துக்கு எந்த இடைஞ்சலும் ஏற்படக்கூடாது என்பதால், அமைதியாக இருந்தேன்[8]. ஜெயப்பூருக்கு வர முடியாதது மிகவும் வருத்தமாக உள்ளது. மும்பை மாபியா டான் 2 அடியாட்களிடம் ஆயுதங்கள் கொடுத்து நான் இந்தியா வந்தால் என்னைக் கொல்லுமாறு உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளாராம்[9]. அதனால் நான் விழாவுக்கு வரவில்லை என்னுடைய வருகையால் சக எழுத்தாளர்களின் உயிருக்கு ஆபத்து ஏற்பட்டு விடக்கூடாது என்பதால், இந்தவிழாவில் கலந்து கொள்வதை ரத்து செய்துள்ளேன்”, என்று தெரிவித்துள்ளார்[10].
ஜிலானியும், ருஷ்டியும் – இஸ்லாம் அடிப்படைவாதம் வேலை செய்யும் விதம்: இந்திய-விரோதிகள் தலைநகரில் மாநாடு நடத்த அனுமதி தருகிறார்கள், பாதுகாப்புத் தருகிறார்கள். அருந்ததி ராய் போன்ற தேசவிரோதிகளும் கலந்து கொண்டு பேசுகிறார்கள். எதிர்ப்புத் தெரிவிப்பவர்களை கைது செய்கிறார்கள். பிறகு, ருஷ்டி விஷயத்தில் மட்டும் ஏன் வேறுவிதமாக நடந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும்? இது செக்யூலரிஸாமா? மதவாதமா, பிறகு யாரை அப்படி வளர்த்து வருகிறார்கள்? முஸ்லீம் அமைப்புகள் ஏன் ஜிலானியை எதிர்க்கவில்லை? ருஷ்டியும் முஸ்லீம், ஜிலானியும் முஸ்லீம் என்றால், இந்தியர்களாக இருக்கும் நிலையில், முஸ்லீம்கள், இருவரையும் எதிர்த்திருக்க வேண்டும். ஆனால், ருஷ்டியை கொலையும் செய்வோம், ஆனால், ஜிலானி விஷயத்தில் வாயை மூடிக் கொண்டிருப்போம் என்றால், அது என்ன “யிஸம்”?

JAIPUR, India — In the latest setback for free speech in India, Salman Rushdie, the author who has survived a 23-year-old Iranian fatwa calling for his death, backed out of attending a literature festival in his native country because of a new assassination threat against him.
In a statement, Mr. Rushdie, the Mumbai native whose 1988 novel, “The Satanic Verses,” inflamed many Muslims, said he decided not to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival, where he has spoken before, after Indian intelligence agencies warned him that “paid assassins from the Mumbai underworld may be on their way to Jaipur to ‘eliminate’ me.” He later said on Twitter that he would appear at the event via a video link.
Mr. Rushdie’s cancellation is the latest in a series of blows to free speech in India that have included a court challenge to Google and Facebook for what a petitioner claimed was content that is offensive to various religious groups, and a proposal by a senior Indian minister to prescreen content posted on social networking sites.
The Indian Constitution offers its citizens only a qualified right to free speech and allows the government to restrict speech if it deems it offensive or unacceptable to community sentiments. Moreover, the national government has often done little to protect artists, authors and others who have been singled out for violent protests by religious, ethnic and other groups. Maqbool Fida Husain, one of modern India’s greatest painters, died last year in London after living in self-imposed exile for the last several years because the government could not guarantee his safety from right-wing Hindu groups that criticized his paintings of Hindu goddesses.
India has long had a difficult relationship with Mr. Rushdie, one of its greatest living writers celebrated in the West but often considered a nuisance at home. India, which has the largest Muslim population after Indonesia and Pakistan, was the first major country to ban “The Satanic Verses.” In 1989, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran issued a fatwa, calling for Mr. Rushdie’s assassination.
Tension had been building about Mr. Rushdie’s planned visit for several weeks. Some Muslim leaders initially said that the New York-based British citizen should be denied a visa to come to India, but Mr. Rushdie does not need a visa to visit India. Later, his opponents said they would protest his visit unless he apologized to Muslims.
It did not help Mr. Rushdie that the government of Rajasthan State, whose capital is Jaipur, openly questioned its ability to protect him. Nor did the federal government provide any public assurances that it could guarantee his safety.
Mr. Rushdie said that he did not entirely believe the intelligence reports about the threat against him but that he decided not to take any chances. “While I have some doubts about the accuracy of this intelligence, it would be irresponsible of me to come to the festival in such circumstances; irresponsible to my family, to the festival audience, and to my fellow writers,” he said in the statement. “I will therefore not travel to Jaipur as planned.”
Festival organizers say they expect more than 250 authors and 100,000 visitors to attend the five-day event, which is in its sixth year. It has become the most important literary event in South Asia and draws visitors from across the world. Oprah Winfrey is expected to speak Saturday.
Even before the controversy about Mr. Rushdie’s visit exploded in recent weeks, India was struggling with the balance between free speech and the sensitivities of its many religious and ethnic minorities.
The Delhi High Court, the equivalent of a United States Appeals Court, is considering a case against Google and Facebook for content that an Indian activist has argued offends the sensibilities of Hindus, Muslims and Christians. The judge overseeing the case inflamed free-speech advocates by saying that India could resort to the kind of censorship practiced in China if Internet companies did not do a better job policing their sites. Moreover, India’s government offered its official support to the petitioner’s case against the sites.
Just a month earlier, India’s minister overseeing technology and education, Kapil Sibal, suggested that sites should screen content before it is uploaded, a proposal that he and other officials later backed away from. Executives for social networking sites said that, in private meetings, Mr. Sibal was particularly incensed about unflattering and derogatory references to the leader of the ruling Congress party, Sonia Gandhi.
“We have to take care of the sensibilities of our people,” Mr. Sibal told reporters during a news conference at his home in New Delhi in early December. “Cultural ethos is very important to us.”
Earlier in 2011, one of the two ministries that Mr. Sibal oversees passed new rules governing Internet content that require Internet firms to take down within 36 hours any material posted on Web sites that officials or private citizens could deem to be disparaging, harassing, blasphemous and hateful, among other things.
Mr. Sibal, who attended the festival on Friday and spoke about and read poetry that he has written, did not address the controversy about his ministry’s policies and the Rushdie controversy. The moderator of his session, one of the festival’s organizers, cut off uncomfortable questions posed to him by the audience, according to people present during the session.
Organizers at the Jaipur Literature Festival said Mr. Rushdie’s decision not to attend was the latest in a series of assaults against the artistic community in India by the government and special interest groups.
“Why do we continue as a nation to succumb to one pressure or another?” asked Sanjoy Roy, who leads the company that organizes the festival. “This is a huge problem for Indian democracy.”

Rushdie, 65, issued a statement through JLF organizers saying he was calling off his Jaipur visit due to security reasons. Festival director Sanjay Roy read out Rushdie’s statement: “For the last several days, I have made no public comment about my proposed trip to Jaipur Literary Festival at the request of local authorities in Rajasthan, hoping they would put in place such precautions as might be necessary to allow me to come and address the festival audience in circumstances that were comfortable and safe for all.
“I have now been informed by intelligence sources in Maharashtra and Rajasthan that paid assassins from the Mumbai underworld may be on their way to Jaipur to ‘eliminate’ me. While I have some doubts about the accuracy of this intelligence, it would be irresponsible of me to come to the festival in such circumstances; irresponsible to my family, to the festival audience, and to my fellow writers. I will, therefore, not travel to Jaipur as planned,” read Rushdie’s statement.

When Darul Uloom, Deoband, Islamic seminary at saharanpur, demanded ban on the visit of Salman Rushdie in Jaipur Literature Festival, it lit the faces of many Muslim leaders in poll bound state.
It was anticipated that Darul’s demand would have major effect in the region that will go for poll on February 28 and Rushdie episode along with 4.5% quota to Muslims will be covertly used as a tool to polarize Muslim voters in favour of Congress-RLD alliance.
Rushdie cancelled his visit for security reasons but it has given sufficient political ammunition to the leaders of this poll bound region, where majority of assembly seats are dominated by Muslim voters so the seven constituencies of the native district of Darul Uloom.
These constituencies, however, have hogged the limelight soon after Congress decided to bank upon the political acumen of Kazi Rasheed Masood.
Interestingly Kazi had been the flag holder of anti-Congress politics for long 35 years and he joined Congress a few months back after splitting from Samajwadi Party.
Ignoring his entire cadre in the district, the party gave tickets to Kazi’s men in all seven constituency. It drew a quick reaction when party’s stalwart Gujar leader Yashpal Singh parted his ways and joined hands with Mulayam Singh Yadav to teach the congress and Kazi a lesson. Besides Muslims the region has sizable population of Gujar, Saini, upper caste and dalit voters.
Those party leaders who were preparing for elections for years also got disappointed and raised questions over the total surrender before Kazi. “This was not the way to run a party like Congress,” commented Isham Singh, former MP and dalit leader, who joined Congress after parting his ways with Mayawati.
Sources say anger is brewing inside the party cadre which will go against the party in coming poll. Party`s former MLA Surendra Kapil also believes “it will demorlise the lower cadre of party workers”.
Unfazed by his criticism Kazi is confident of winning all seven seats of the district clarifying he is aware about the activities of those who failed to get the tickets. “We are keeping a close eye on their activities,” said Kazi mincing no words in admitting that he has been trying to adjust himself in his new political outfit.
Declaring Rushdie episode a religious matter, Kazi, however, demanded for a strong law in the country against blasphemy. “It will help us in keeping a check on those who don`t care for religious `sentiments of people”, he clarified. It was Kazi who accompanied Mulayam Singh when the latter visited Darul Uloom in ahead of previous Lok Sabha election in a bid to seek the blessings of the Maulananas of the seminary.
An exporter of the town, Abdur Rehman, however, has doubts over the political abilities of Kazi. “I doubt that he would bring fortunes for his new party when he failed to do so for SP.”
Describing the 4.5% quota for Muslims in OBC quota simply and eyewash to lure Muslims the entrepreneur insisted “if he (Kazi) was really concerned for the welfare of Muslims then he should ensure quota for his clansmen in education”.
Kazi’s call to ensure defeat for all Msulim candidates of Samajawadi Party also has not gone well down in Muslims who had supported Mulayam Singh Yadav in previous elections.
After delimitation, 74 assembly constituencies across the state (majority of them are in western UP) have more than 30% Muslims voters while in 70 constituencies their percentage varies between 20 to 29. Mulayam had enjoyed an overwhelming support of Muslims in previous assembly and Lok Sabha elections by garnering their 46 to 30% votes in different elections. “How Kazi and his men could overlook the affinity of Mulayam with Muslims,” asked an Urdu journalist of Deoband emphasizing that the coming elections won`t be a cakewalk for Kazi and his men and they will taste the wrath of their own people.
Sources say that many dissidents are in constant contact with SP supreme through Ch Yashpal Singh and they could benefit SP by undermining Kazi and his team in elections. Unfazed by the moves of his rivals and dissidents Kazi is confident of winning the hearts of people as he declares “all candidates of Samajwadi Party will forfeit their security deposits in the poll”.
Under such political situation it will be interesting to watch that who will win over the hearts of voters in land of Darul Uloom. The victory of Kazi`s men in election would elevate Kazi`s status in Congress and if he fails it would bring a serious blow to Congress in Saharanpur region.
