LONDON: Britain has banned controversial Indian Islamic televangelist Zakir Naik, who once claimed that “every Muslim should be a terrorist,” from entering the country, citing his “unacceptable behaviour”.
Home secretary Theresa May said 44-year-old Naik would not be allowed to enter the country under laws that can exclude anyone who writes or publishes material that can “foment, justify or glorify terrorist violence”.
Indian television preacher Naik was due to give a series of lectures at arenas in Wembley and Sheffield.
May said the doctor was being excluded because repeated comments attributed to him was evidence of his “unacceptable behaviour”.
She said: “Coming to the UK is a privilege not a right, and I am not willing to allow those who might not be conducive to the public good to enter the UK.”
Website footage had shown the preacher making the claim that every Muslim should embrace terrorism.
Naik said Muslims should beware of people saying Osama bin Laden was right or wrong, adding: “If you ask my view, if given the truth, if he is fighting the enemies of Islam, I am for him.
If he is terrorising the terrorists, if he is terrorising America the terrorist, the biggest terrorist, every Muslim should be a terrorist.”
He is also reported as saying that western women make themselves “more susceptible to rape” by wearing revealing clothing.
Mumbai-born Naik is a medical doctor by profession, having attained a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Mumbai.
Naik is the founder and president of the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) which is a non-profit organisation. It also owns and broadcasts the free-to-air global Peace TV channel.

If you’re looking for a snapshot of India’s hapless response to radical Islam, then look no further than Bombay-based cleric Dr. Zakir Naik. In India, the 44-year-old Dr. Naik—a medical doctor by training and a televangelist by vocation—is a widely respected figure, feted by newspapers and gushed over by television anchors.
The British, however, want no part of him. On Friday, the newly elected Conservative-led government announced that it would not allow Dr. Naik to enter Britain to deliver a series of lectures. According to Home Secretary Theresa May, the televangelist has made “numerous comments” that are evidence of his “unacceptable behavior.”The good doctor’s views run the gamut from nutty to vile, so it’s hard to pinpoint which of them has landed him in trouble. For instance, though Dr. Naik has condemned terrorism, at times he also appears to condone it. “If he [Osama bin Laden] is fighting the enemies of Islam, I am for him,” he said in a widely watched 2007 YouTube diatribe.
“If he is terrorizing the terrorists, if he is terrorizing America the terrorist, the biggest terrorist, I am with him. Every Muslim should be a terrorist.”Dr. Naik recommends the death penalty for homosexuals and for apostasy from the faith, which he likens to wartime treason. He calls for India to be ruled by the medieval tenets of Shariah law. He supports a ban on the construction of non-Muslim places of worship in Muslim lands and the Taliban’s bombing of the Bamiyan Buddhas. He says revealing clothes make Western women “more susceptible to rape.” Not surprisingly, Dr. Naik believes that Jews “control America” and are the “strongest in enmity to Muslims.”
Of course, every faith has its share of cranks; and, arguably, India has more than its share. But it’s impossible to relegate Dr. Naik to Indian Islam’s fringe. Earlier this year, the Indian Express listed him as the country’s 89th most powerful person, ahead of Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen, eminent lawyer and former attorney general Soli Sorabjee, and former Indian Premier League cricket commissioner Lalit Modi.
Dr. Naik’s satellite TV channel, Peace TV, claims a global viewership of up to 50 million people in 125 countries. On YouTube, a search for Dr. Naik turns up more than 36,000 hits.Nobody accuses Dr. Naik of direct involvement in terrorism, but those reportedly drawn to his message include Najibullah Zazi, the Afghan-American arrested last year for planning suicide attacks on the New York subway; Rahil Sheikh, accused of involvement in a series of train bombings in Bombay in 2006; and Kafeel Ahmed, the Bangalore man fatally injured in a failed suicide attack on Glasgow airport in 2007.Nonetheless, when the doctor appears on a mainstream Indian news channel, his interviewers tend to be deferential. Senior journalist and presenter Shekhar Gupta breathlessly introduced his guest last year as a “rock star of televangelism” who teaches “modern Islam” and “his own interpretation of all the faiths around the world.”
A handful of journalists—among them Praveen Swami of the Hindu, and the grand old man of Indian letters, Khushwant Singh—have questioned Dr. Naik’s views, but most take his carefully crafted image of moderation at face value.At first glance, it’s easy to understand why. Unlike the foaming mullah of caricature, Dr. Naik eschews traditional clothing for a suit and tie. His background as a doctor and his often gentle demeanor set him apart, as does his preaching in English. Unlike traditional clerics, Dr. Naik quotes freely from non-Muslim scripture, including the Bible and the Vedas. (You have to pay attention to realize that invariably this is either to disparage other faiths, or to interpret them in line with his version of Islam.)
The depth of Dr. Naik’s learning is easily apparent.But this doesn’t fully explain Dr. Naik’s escape from criticism. It helps that Indians appear to have trouble distinguishing between free speech and hate speech. In a Western democracy, demanding the murder of homosexuals and the second-class treatment of non-Muslims would likely attract public censure or a law suit. In India, it goes unchallenged as long as it
has a religious imprimatur. However, create a book or a painting that ruffles religious sentiment, as the writer Taslima Nasreen and the painter M. F. Husain both discovered, and either the government or a mob of pious vigilantes will strive to muzzle you.In general, India accords extra deference to allegedly holy men of all stripes unlike, say, France, which strives to keep religion out of the public square.
Taxpayers subsidize the Haj pilgrimage for pious Muslims and a similar, albeit much less expensive, journey for Hindus to a sacred lake in Tibet. This reflexive deference effectively grants the likes of Dr. Naik—along with all manner of Hindu and Christian charlatans—protection against the kind of robust scrutiny he would face in most other democracies.Finally, unlike Hindu bigots, such as the World Hindu Council’s Praveen Togadia, whose fiercest critics tend to be fellow Hindus, radical Muslims go largely unchallenged. The vast majority of Indian Muslims remain moderate, but their leaders are often fundamentalists and the community has done a poor job of policing its own ranks. Moreover, most of India’s purportedly secular intelligentsia remains loath to criticize Islam, even in its most radical form, lest this be interpreted as sympathy for Hindu nationalism.Unless this changes, unless Indians find the ability to criticize a radical Islamic preacher such as Dr. Naik as robustly as they would his Hindu equivalent, the idea of Indian secularism will remain deeply flawed.Mr. Dhume, a columnist for WSJ.com, is writing a book on the new Indian middle class

A local Hindu group has come out strongly against the police decision to allow Islamic Research Foundation president Zakir Naik to speak at a meeting in the communally sensitive Mumbra township near here.
A delegation of Hindu Janajagurti Samiti will meet the District Collector and the Police Commissioner to submit a memorandum seeking cancellation of permission granted to him, district office bearer of the Samiti, Prasanna Dhage said.
A number of cases have been registered against Naik in various parts of the state for his derogatory remarks and he should not have been permitted to address the meeting, a release issued by the organisation said.
The Samiti had organised a protest demonstration in front of the district collectorate last Monday against the permission granted by Thane police to Naik, an Indian Muslim televangelist and founder of the Mumbai-based Peace TV.
The protest was organised after Naik hurt the feelings of Hindus after he allegedly questioned the very existence of Lord Ganesh, according to the press release.
State home minister R R Patil had recently asked the police to verify the “controversial” content reportedly posted by Zakir Naik on a social networking site.
“Patil had asked the police to examine and take appropriate action after reports appeared in a section of the media, claiming Naik posted controversial comments on a social networking site,” a senior home department official said.
After the Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna accused Naik of vilifying Lord Ganesh, Naik had tendered a statement of apology saying, “I am sorry if I have hurt sentiments or feelings of any person”.
Naik also claimed that one of his staff members put up two quotes on his account which were not approved by him.

Mumbai: Famous Islamic preacher Dr. Zakir Naik, who was under attack for some of his statements have apologized for hurting the sentiments of other Muslims. A meeting was organized by the Mumbai Assistant Commission of Police yesterday where Dr. Naik apologized and signed a letter of repentance.
In the meeting Mufi Mahmood Akhtar and Mufti Ashraf Raza objected to Dr. Zakir Naik’s statement regarding Prophet Mohammad that it was insulting to the Prophet. Dr. Zaik acceted his mistake and said it was unintentional on his part.
A Letter of Repentance was prepared in front of the Joint Commission of Police L K Prasad which Dr. Naik signed and promised that he will never repeat this statement that can hurt the sentiments of the followers of other sects.
Representavie of Ulama Ahl-e-Sunnat Maulana Mueen Mian, Hafiz Athar, Saeed Noori, and Maulana Yusuf Raza participated in the meeting. Meeting also decided that since Dr. Naik has apologized, the ten-day long Peace Conference may go on now.
Peace- The Solution for Humanity is organized from 14th Nov to 23rd Nov in Mumbai on Somaiya Grouds. A number of speakers from India and abroad are expected to participate.

MUMBAI: Nearly a year after he stirred up a tempest with his statement that Allah’s blessings be upon Yazid, the killer of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Imam Hussein, Dr Zakir Naik is back in the eye of another storm. A section of Sunni and Shia Muslims is up in arms against the Islamic preacher for saying that help should be sought from Allah alone, not even from the Prophet himself.
The 37-year-old suited, bearded Dr Naik who also owns the religious channel Peace TV, is a familiar figure known for his preachings. He founded the Islamic Research Foundation and travels all over the world giving speeches, especially in the Middle East. On Friday, the former medical professional told a news channel that Allah alone should be approached for help. Immediately, a group of Sunni Muslims rushed to home minister R R Patil demanding a ban on his Islamic conference to be held in the city between November 14 and 24.
Dr Naik said he was being targeted for a statement which most Muslims believe in and share. “I stand by what I said,” he told TOI. “And I didn’t commit any sacrilege. The majority of Muslims across the world believe that Allah is the almighty and help should be sought only from him. Parts of my earlier speeches are being taken out of context and presented with malicious intent.”
Last month, a group of Shias in UP put pressure on the administration to stop the series of lectures Dr Zakir Naik was supposed to deliver in Allahabad and Lucknow because of the Yazid controversy.
On Friday, a Lucknow-based mufti issued a fatwa against him for allegedly supporting Osama bin Laden.
“I never supported Osama. I have always been saying that all those who kill innocents are terrorists. So if the USA kills innocents, it doesn’t have the right to call Osama a terrorist unless it owns up its own crime. Here again my statement has been twisted,” he said.
When asked if he felt threatened, Dr Naik replied, “Only cowards get scared. They have no guts to face the truth and level baseless, false charges. My programme in Mumbai is on and even R R Patil has accepted my invitation.”

MUMBAI: Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik’s remark that help should be sought from Allah alone, and not even from Prophet Mohammed, could threaten a sectarian clash between Sunni and Deobandi Muslims.
A day after a Lucknow-based mufti issued a fatwa against Naik, a group of Sunni ulema from Mumbai, on Saturday, accused him of working at the behest of Saudi Arabia-backed Wahabis and Deobandis. The group also called for Naik’s immediate arrest and a ban on his conference scheduled to be held at the Somaiya ground in Sion from November 14 to 23. The group has also threatened to disrupt Naik’s Islamic conference if the state government did not cancel it.
“If the conference takes place, we will be compelled to go there and ask him to explain his blasphemous remark,” said Mufti Ashraf Raza Qadri, a senior cleric belonging to Idara Sharia, the Shariah court of Sunni Muslims in Maharashtra.
However, community leaders are worried and feel that this could lead to a confrontation between the Deobandi and the Sunni sects.
This is not the first time Naik has been caught in the eye of a storm. Last month, Uttar Pradesh government had to cancel the permission granted to Naik to hold meetings across the state after he was accused of supporting Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
Naik vehemently denied supporting Osama bin Laden but refused to label him a terrorist. “I condemn the perpetrators of 9/11. However, there is no evidence to establish Osama bin Laden’s involvement in the World Trade Centre bombing. I can, therefore, neither call him a terrorist nor hail him as a saint because I don’t know him.”
Last year, Naik had stirred up a controversy with his statement that Allah’s blessings be upon Yazid, whom a section of Muslims, especially the Shias, call the killer of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Imam Hussein. “There is a difference of opinion whether Yazid should be condemned or hailed. Those who are offended by my statement are free not to believe me, but they cannot deny me my right to speak what I believe is true,” he had said.
Meanwhile, Shia scholar Zaheer Abbas Rizvi said that some city-based Shias were also planning to launch a campaign against Dr Naik.

MUMBAI: Home minister R R Patil has asked the police to verify the “controversial” content reportedly posted by Zakir Naik on a social networking site, it is reliably learnt.
“Patil has asked the police to examine and take appropriate action on reports that have appeared in a section of the media claiming Naik has posted controversial comments on a social networking site,” said a senior home department official.
On Monday, Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna accused Naik of vilifying Ganpati. Naik—an Islamic preacher—has tendered an apology. “I am sorry if I have hurt the sentiments or feelings of any person,” he said in a statement. Naik said one of his staff members put up two quotes on his account which were not approved by him.

Infamous orator and Ahle Hadith doctor Zakir naik has been issued Non Bailable warrants against him by the Jhansi court of Uttar Pradesh,India.A complaint was filed against him by Mudassar Ullah Khan, a resident of Chhatapur, Jhansi in 2008. Khan alleged that apart from the speech, pamphlets were also distributed in Jhansi condemning those who follow the Hadis or the book on the sayings and doings of Prophet Mohammed salallahoalaihiwassalam.
In April, the additional district sessions judge at Jhansi issued summons asking Naik to appear before the court on May 12. Naik approached the Allahabad high court for a stay on the summons. Advocate Shahid Ali Siddiqui, who represents the complainant, said, “Dr Naik did not appear before the court on May 12 and the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
Advocate Nazrul Islam Zafri who is representing Naik in the high court said, “The complaints made against Dr Naik are frivolous and malicious. It has been filed just to defame him.”The case will be heard by Justice RD Khare of Allahabad high court.
The Allahabad high court will be hearing a petition filed by Mumbai-based television evangelist Dr Zakir Naik on May 16 in a three-year old case where the preacher is alleged to have given speeches on television, exhorting Muslims to take up terrorism.
Naik, who heads a group called the Islamic Research Foundation, Mumbai, is alleged to have given the speech in Bangalore. The talk was relayed on his ‘Peace’ television channel on January 21, 2006.
Raza Academy,a representative body of majority Indian Muslims have written to the Mumbai police commissioner saying that Naik should not be allowed to leave the country.Muhammad Saeed Noori ,General secretary have asked the govt. to Seize his passport immediately.
